Joel Peter Levack

Joel Peter Levack was selected as one of the top 6 artists in the North of England aged 15 having his work toured around the UK to demonstrate the highest level of A* achievable. He left the academic led Grammar School at Leeds to pursue a desire to become a professional artist. Inspired by Yorkshire born artists like Hirst and Hockney, Joel took studios in Leeds (Silver Street Studios; formally Yas N Y Kylo) and sold his first painting aged 17. He studied A level art along side media and English at Jacob Kramer (Leeds College of Art). During this time Levack art directed a band, shooting numerous videos (on VHS) and performing alongside with  live art. Levack also partnered with Hames, of both performance work and 2D in what became a decade long partnership. The pair moved to London to receive much publicity by opening one of the cities first Pop Up art galleries. As a solo artist Levack went professional aged 19 leaving bar and TV work which had (and has since, provided a subsidy for his practice). Aged 20 he set up a second studio in Brooklyn, New York (Kangaroo Ranch) and continued to paint, primarily mixed media landscapes. Before 2003 he had taken part in around 15 group shows and 25 solo shows. After a 7 year hiatus focusing on the gallery in London, which morphed into an events company, Joel picked up the brushes again to create the album cover for The Kooks. This rebooted his painting which he worked on alongside event and festival work throughout his 30s. In 2019 Joel became a full time artist again, drawing, painting, occasionally sculpting and performing. His work ties the themes of confusion and comedy, and within his multi disciplinary practice he co directed Changing Room Gallery for 2 years before co founding All Is Joy - an arts and media organisation, which houses Levack Studios in London’s Soho.
